Celebrating 20 Years of Lyrath Estate

Lyrath Estate dates back to Norman times, likely named by the French-speaking De Ponte family in the 12th century, with early references to a monastery and castle on the grounds. The property passed through several families, including the Shortalls, Tobins, and later the Wheeler and Wheeler-Cuffe families, who significantly shaped its history. In the 19th century, Sir Charles Denny Wheeler-Cuffe commissioned architect John McCurdy to redesign the house, creating one of his most important country homes. The estate later became associated with notable figures such as Lady Charlotte Wheeler-Cuffe, a botanical explorer who redesigned its gardens. After remaining in the Tupper family until 1997, the estate was purchased by Xavier McAuliffe in 2003 and transformed into the Lyrath Estate Hotel, which opened in 2006.
